Spring is the ideal time for ticks to latch onto your dog, this is due to the ticks natural breeding patterns meaning that the highest concentration for them is around this time. Spring has sprung relatively early this year so you can bet that the ticks have as well. It’s important to check your dog regularly as having ticks can lead to serious health problems.
Ticks Impact On Your Dogs Health
Ticks aren’t just pests that feast on your dog and cause your dog to itch. Ticks are the second highest creature to spread infectious diseases, not only to dogs but to humans alike, although ticks pose a much less threat to humans. Ticks that live in the UK carry a very dangerous disease called Lyme disease. Lyme disease in dogs is a serious bacteria which can affect cells in the nervous system and in muscles.
Checking Your Dog For Ticks
Ticks can latch onto your dog anywhere on the body, you should start by rubbing your hands over the entirety of your dogs body. Notice any new bumps? These may be ticks. What To Do If I Find A Tick?
- DO NOT panic.
- DO NOT tear it off! This can be extremely painful for your dog and may cause parts of the tick to be left inside your dog, which could become infected.
- DO NOT try any other means of killing the tick, even simply probing the tick may cause it to vomit, spreading the Lyme Disease into your precious pooch.
- You can remove the tick if you know how to do it correctly. If not, contact a trained practitioner such as your veterinarian or your local dog groomer who will be able to remove the tick.
- In our dog grooming salon, we always do a thorough check for ticks and fleas before the grooming process. If you’re worried about ticks, give Luke a call on 01503 269251 and he’ll be happy to assist.
